Welcome to Composition: Powerful Paragraphs to Convincing Critiques Self-Paced Class! This course is designed for self-motivated, independent high school students who desire to improve and refine their writing abilities. Students will have eight lessons to complete in this course. Tools will be provided to guide students towards concise and clear expression of thoughts. Focus of this course will be writing effective, coherent, and powerful paragraphs. This is a skill that will last a lifetime!
- The models of structure covered in this course will address the following:
- Key Word Outlining and Writing from Notes
- Descriptive, Analytical, Comparison/Contrast, Simple-to-Complex Paragraphs
- Narrative & Creative Writing
- Summarizing References & Essay Writing
- Literary Critique
Elements of style taught in this course include techniques to encourage vibrant and succinct sentence writing, including IEW’s dress-ups and sentence openers. Transitional words and phrases will be an integral part of this course as well.
What is included?
This self-paced class is the equivalent to a one semester class. It is 100% teacher-supported and all class resources will be delivered via an class page online though not all assignments are online. Cost includes recorded lessons for each assignment as well as the editing of one assignment per lesson. Eight assignments will be expected over the course of this self-paced class, and each assignment will have specific requirements. Each student receives personalized feedback on written work. It is not required that students submit writing assignments, but it is highly encouraged. Instructor will offer live office hours monthly in September and October and is available by email daily.
Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)
Focus of this writing class will be the award-winning Institute for Excellence in Writing’s methodology of writing with structure and style, focusing on not plagiarizing while outlining and creating organized and well-written paragraphs.

Pre-requisites for Class: High school students who are capable of writing complete sentences and who wish to refine their composition and write about topics of choice will benefit from this class. Students should be capable of following detailed instructions and set goals to complete all writing requirements within a specified time frame. It is best if students have at least one year of IEW experience, but all high school students are welcome!

This class is licensed to be used with one family only. You can use this class with many different children within a family, but the content may not be transferred to another family or be used in a co-op. Special co-op packages are available.
